The Lagos State Government has unveiled a new Smart Traffic Management System designed to reduce gridlock and make travel across the city faster and more efficient.
The system uses AI-powered cameras, digital traffic lights, and real-time monitoring centers to manage traffic flow on major highways such as Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki–Epe Expressway, and Ikorodu Road.

During the launch event at Alausa, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the initiative is part of a long-term plan to transform Lagos into a fully connected smart city. He explained that the new platform will allow officials to detect road obstructions instantly, adjust traffic light timings dynamically, and dispatch LASTMA officers more efficiently.

Commuters who tested the system on its first day reported noticeable improvements in travel times, especially during early morning rush hours.
Some drivers, however, expressed concerns about potential abuse of the AI camera system, fearing that fines for traffic violations might increase. Government officials clarified that the system prioritizes road safety, not revenue generation.

Experts say Lagos could become one of Africa’s leading smart cities if the program succeeds. The government also announced that a mobile app will be launched soon to allow residents to check traffic conditions before leaving home.
