The Federal Government has officially kicked off a large-scale infrastructure overhaul aimed at upgrading major highways, bridges, and rural access roads across all six geopolitical zones.
According to the Ministry of Works, the project will span three years and involve over 400 contractors nationwide. In a statement released in Abuja, officials said the initiative is expected to improve transportation efficiency, reduce travel times, and support economic growth by making it easier for goods to move from farms to markets.

In Lagos, work has already begun along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, with engineers deployed to expand drainage systems and reinforce weakened sections. Similarly, contractors have moved heavy equipment to the Enugu–Port Harcourt Highway to fix erosion-prone areas that have made the route nearly impassable for months.
State governors expressed support for the initiative, saying it will help improve road safety and reduce accident rates caused by potholes and narrow lanes. Some civil society groups, however, urged the government to ensure transparency in contract awards and prevent project abandonment.

Transport analysts predict that if executed properly, the infrastructure program will significantly boost Nigeria’s logistics sector and attract foreign investment. The Federal Government has promised to release quarterly updates on the progress of all ongoing road projects.
