The National Assembly has commenced deliberations on a new Youth Employment and Innovation Bill aimed at reducing unemployment and boosting entrepreneurship across Nigeria.
The bill proposes tax breaks for startups, government-backed tech grants, and mandatory skill acquisition programs for secondary and tertiary institution students.

During plenary, lawmakers emphasized that Nigeria’s youth population—estimated at over 60 percent—needs more support to compete in a technology-driven global economy.
The bill also seeks to establish regional innovation centers where young people can access training, mentorship, and business incubation services.

Several youth-focused organizations welcomed the proposed legislation but urged lawmakers to include stronger funding guarantees to prevent the projects from being abandoned.
Economists say the bill could significantly stimulate economic growth if implemented effectively.

Debate is expected to continue over the next few weeks before the final version is sent to the President for approval.
