The Federal Government has confirmed that it has secured new funding for the second phase of Nigeria’s national rail modernization project.
The funds will be used to upgrade old tracks, purchase additional locomotives, and expand routes connecting major economic hubs.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the new funding will cover lines such as Port Harcourt–Maiduguri, Lagos–Calabar, and the extension of the Abuja–Kaduna rail.
Government officials said the project will create thousands of jobs and reduce pressure on major highways.

Trade unions welcomed the development but urged the government to prioritize maintenance to avoid the rapid deterioration of new rail assets.
Transport analysts predict that a modern rail network could significantly reduce transport costs for businesses and help stimulate regional commerce.
